This scarce Luftschutz Air Raid Warden Armband is a fantastic period worn example. It was worn by members of the Werkluftschutz, the German organization for factory air raid defense. It’s Bevo machine woven construction, made of a thin red fabric with a woven Latin letter “W” in white thread. It has woven selvage edges at the top and bottom, and is machine sewn together in the back with red thread. The interior of this Luftschutz Air Raid Warden Armband shows details of the machine woven construction. The fabric on this one is nice and crisp, with bright original color throughout, the added bonus is unlike most encountered this armband was an actually issued/worn example. Amongst collectors of armbands, this would be considered a rare armband to encounter.
Note – Formed in late 1932 the Deutsches Luftschutzverband (German Air Protection League), was a voluntary organization designed to provide civil air raid protection in large civilian centers. Shortly after Hitler ascension to power the Deutsches Luftschutzverband was restructured and placed under the supervision of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, (National Air Ministry), under the control of Hermann Göring.
